If you’ve ever asked yourself, should I use www.mysite.com or mysite.com? then you are not alone and maybe this post will help you decide.
The thing is, it does not matter, if you are worried about what search engines think, they don’t really care about one or the other. However they will treat www.mysite.com and mysite.com as 2 different sites. That’s something to keep in mind when you create backlinks to your website (backlinks are links that link back to your website).
You can setup to use www or not in your wordpress dashboard by going to settings/general in the WordPress address and Site Address.
To ensure that you do not loose any of the juice that you might have to both versions www and non www, I strongly suggest that you do a 301 redirect. If you don’t know what a 301 redirect is, don’t panic, I’ll explain.
if your site is www.site.com then you want to redirect people that are looking for site.com to www.site.com (and vice versa).
One easy and free way to do this, is to use a free plugin such as Simple 301 redirect plugin.
For those of you not familiar with 301 redirect:
If your website is www.mysite.com
then you need to redirect mysite.com to www.mysite.com
If you site is mysite.com
then you need to redirect www.mysite.com to mysite.com
